Wotcha!

Blimey, Is it spring already? Rehearsals have been going well for my forthcoming solo album, tentatively titled Charm. I've been working with Oshia Drury, Laura Iseley, Jo Waterworth and Viv Andreae on some rather glorious vocal harmonies. Also in the fold are percussionist Dan Chalmers and the multi talented Jim Viz. We started the season under the guise of the Glastonbury Carollers Performing the May Carols around Glastonbury including Chalice Well at 6am on May morning! We're in process of recording some of the Carols at Glastonbury Studios while they're still in season. It's intended that these songs will form part of a 'Carols for all Seasons' CD, which will include new recordings of the Solstice set. The original Carols for Solstice tape is now out of print and for various reasons we're not intending to re-realease it in that format.

I have also been working up some new material with Will Greenwood, which is likely to form the basis of a new Indivisible set for later in the year.

There have been discussions about the possibility of a Silver on the Tree re-union gig, possibly around summer solstice. I will post any developments up here as soon as they occur.

See you at gigs & festivals over the summer - see the Gigs page for details

The Excruxiating Self-Review

Welcome to the realm of tim, this is the brainiac monster child of me, tim hall, composer, web author and slightly schizophrenic autobiographer. I know that it's a sign of impending mental aberration to talk about one'self in the third person, but i'm sure if tim scrubs hard enough he'll manage to remove those nasty hairs from the palms of his hands.

The name I've given as a kind of subtitle to the project (and erstwhile handle for my backing band) - Mining for Starlight - comes from reading George McDonald's children's novel "at the back of the North Wind". This neatly conveys the sense of paradox i encounter in most of my waking life. Most of the music has been written over the 15 years i've lived, and worked in the open-air lunatic asylum that is Glastonbury. This collection of influences has produced a fusion of New Age Nonsense, whimsical accapella arrangements, self-indulgent songs about obsessive love, paranoia and onanism; all written from an entirely subjective viewpoint, full of supposedly intellectual subtleties that nobody ever understands, coupled with a cringeworthy rhyming structure, filling out the gaps with cosmic waffle and banal obscurism.

Tim's melodies are hypnotically forgettable, naggingly obtuse chord sequences turn corners never meant to be there and collide with equally implausible lyrics - an exercise in paradoxical logic, influenced by every embarrassing cheese merchant under the sun.

Tim is possibly one of the most misunderstood songwriters since the author of "Sumer is icumen in" and sadly believes he is a reincarnated unemployed Atlantean bog cleaner

It's always a strange task, attempting to describe your own music in words - the classic composer's headache - Whaddy'a mean EXPLAIN? - if i thought i could explain using words i'd have written a website.

Performed some free form gigs jamming with DJs and the Indivisible Cooperanet and rehearsed with Silver on the Tree for a new CD, writing 40% of the material for - Morning Glory (AGASCD 013). 1990 - '92: collaborative venture with Charlie MILLER (Whole Soul Collection, Hubba) a local pop band which went under the moniker of the Diggers, releasing one tape - Through the Window and Across the Garden. Also worked briefly with Kenwyn HOUSE of Reef jamming 70's heavy rock covers.

1988: Formed Silver on the Tree out of the musical group involved in Glastonbury's community mystery dramas. Jana RUNNALLS, who had been the lead singer of the cult goddess inspired 80's radical feminist band OVA, was persuaded to drop her reservations about working with men and come and produce Silver on the Tree's first proper album Eye of the Aeon, which was recorded using the natural acoustics of the Assembly Rooms' magical hall.
Silver on the Tree was primarily a vocal based band, by the second album - Mystic Spiral - this was expanded to include instrumentals and ballads, much of which was self penned.
Although the tapes were made in limited quantities, they have circulated the globe, ending up in some very interesting collections and inspired a small but loyal following.

1986: Formed TribaLaughter with Max PASHM and Danni SPEAKMAN. Jammed with Joie HINTON (Ozrics, Eat Static) in a memorable session at a layby just outside the festival site. Wrote and arranged music for the local community sacred theatre group - Ariadne Productions, which revolved around local feminist author and playwright Kathy JONES. The group performed modern mystery plays around the times of traditional seasonal festivals and involved many of the leading lights of Glastonbury's ever changing artistic community.

Studied Classical Guitar from the age of 13 and began avidly composing music, winning a local radio competition with first proper composition - a trio for flute oboe and cello, called Forsaken Garden retrospectively, after the MIRO sketch. It was performed at St. John's church in Windsor by chamber ensemble Collage, and broadcast in its entirety on Radio 210.

Sang in local choirs led by Gillian DIBDEN, who now leads the Berkshire Youth Choir.
