The most striking thing about this recording is possibly the quality of emotion carried by Tanjy's vocal performance. She is capably backed up here with Will Greenwood's multi-instrumental, engineering and production talents. The album is co-produced by the late Roger Heal and includes instrumental contributions from Nick Harrison The subject matter of the songs is clearly born out of life's turbulent experiences presented in a disarmingly fluffy manner mixed with a gritty sense of realism and some nice atmospheric touches. This album makes me think of the Indigo Girls or Buffy St. Marie in a more mellow mood. It's kind of approachable radical women's country music. You will want to curl up by the fire with the cat on your lap and leave this in the stereo all night, if that's your kind of thing. Balance is brought here in the form of The one cover in the set is a top-of-the-pops last dance smooch version of Todd Rundgren's Shine on me. I'm never entirely sure about covers and this one is no exception. It's beautifully produced and close to the original, possibly too much so. Nevertheless it'll still have some of you waving your lighters around with beatific expressions on your fizzogs. I might as well say that I don't write reviews, cos words just get in the way. Apparently Tanjy doesn't write love songs for exactly the same reasons. Yeah and the rest. Tanjy saves the best for last with the haunting Fire in their eyes. This song is gorgeous and easily my favourite. All in all, a wistful fireside romance, suitable for long winter evenings and languid summer nights. It's been lovingly produced and all in all an excellent album. |
